Exploring the Moon: Designing Tires Fit for Space Travel

In the near future, a groundbreaking lunar mission known as Artemis V is set to send American astronauts back to the moon’s surface. Just like any adventurous road trip, the astronauts will need a reliable and innovative mode of transportation to navigate the rugged lunar terrain.

Enter the Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV), a crucial component of NASA’s ambitious moon exploration plans. Recently, NASA announced partnerships with three groups, including tire giants like Goodyear and Michelin, to develop cutting-edge wheels for the upcoming lunar expedition.

The selected team will face formidable challenges in designing the LTV. The vehicle must not only transport astronauts safely but also operate autonomously on the moon’s surface for extended periods, enduring harsh conditions and extreme temperatures.

Traditional rubber tires would not survive the unforgiving lunar environment, with its abrasive regolith and extreme temperature fluctuations. The task at hand is to create a tire that can withstand the harsh lunar conditions, lasting for a decade and covering over 6,200 miles—an unprecedented feat compared to previous lunar vehicles.

Moreover, NASA’s specifications for the LTV include the ability to navigate any unforeseen obstacles, potentially requiring the wheels to withstand momentary jumps on the moon’s surface. This demands a level of innovation and durability that surpasses conventional tire technologies.

The tire companies involved in the project are currently in the early stages of their feasibility studies. While specifics are limited, they have hinted at novel materials and tire architectures aimed at ensuring the longevity and performance of the lunar wheels throughout the mission.

Venturi Astrolab, one of the competitors, has already unveiled their Flexible Logistics and Exploration (FLEX) rover with deformable lunar wheels, featuring a unique design comprising cables, springs, and flexible tread material. As the project progresses, the company continues to enhance and refine its innovative wheel design through rigorous testing.
