Tiptop, the innovative trade-in platform, has revolutionized the way people can turn their old electronics and other items into cash. With a catalog of over 50,000 specific products eligible for trade-ins, Tiptop offers a convenient solution for those looking to upgrade their gadgets without the hassle of traditional resale methods.

From old phones and laptops to baby strollers, Tiptop accepts a wide range of items for trade-ins. While some items, like fridges, are not eligible due to shipping costs, Tiptop leverages algorithms to dynamically estimate the value of each item based on market prices and depreciation adjustments. This ensures that customers receive fair and competitive trade-in prices.

The average discount across all devices processed by Tiptop is approximately $287. This significant savings allows users to upgrade their devices at a fraction of the cost.

As a payment gateway for Shopify, Tiptop has partnered with leading online merchants like Nothing, Phonedaddy, Cradlewise, Backbone, and King of Christmas. These merchants can enable Tiptop as a payment option, allowing customers to trade in their old items for new purchases seamlessly. Merchants pay a fee to Tiptop, ranging from 5 to 12 percent based on the value of the traded-in item.

Trade Union

The concept of Tiptop emerged after the acquisition of Postmates by Uber in 2020. Founder Lehmann’s realization about the surplus of unused items in households led to the creation of a platform that transforms these items into valuable assets.

Today’s consumer electronics industry promotes frequent upgrades, resulting in a surplus of outdated devices with limited avenues for disposal. Marketplaces like eBay and Craigslist require effort, while manufacturer trade-in programs have restrictions. Tiptop provides a hassle-free solution for consumers looking to part ways with their old devices.

Lehmann envisions Tiptop as a way to unlock the value of unused items in households. By incentivizing users to trade in their old gadgets for cash, Tiptop encourages a more sustainable approach to device disposal.

While Tiptop’s innovative model has the potential to promote device reuse, concerns have been raised about the impact on consumer behavior. Critics worry that easier access to newer devices at a lower cost may encourage more frequent upgrades, perpetuating the cycle of rapid device turnover.
