Dreaming of your next big vacation already? Make sure to add updating your driver’s license to Real ID to your travel checklist. Starting May 7, 2025, anyone without a Real ID–certified license will not be able to board domestic flights within the US, unless they have a passport.
The Real ID requirement is a result of a recommendation made by the 9/11 Commission in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The law was signed by President George W. Bush in 2005, with the deadline for compliance repeatedly pushed back. However, the current deadline for compliance, set for 2025, seems to be final.
Curious about the new Real ID licenses? Wondering how to get yours before the deadline? Here’s everything you need to know about making the switch to Real ID.
What Does a Real ID Look Like?
The Real ID looks similar to regular driver’s licenses, with the main difference being a star in the top right corner. Each state may have slightly different variations, with some featuring a gold circle with a white star, while others have different design elements.

How Do I Get a Real ID?
Visit the Department of Homeland Security’s website for detailed instructions based on your state of residence. Most likely, you will need to apply for a Real ID in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles office and provide various documents as proof of identity and residency.
For example, Missouri residents will need to provide documentation such as a Social Security number, identity documents, lawful status documents, proof of residency, and any name change documentation. Make sure to double-check all requirements and possibly schedule an appointment at the DMV to streamline the process.
What Else Is a Real ID Required For?
Aside from air travel within the US, Real ID may also be required for access to military bases, federal buildings, and nuclear power plants. Make sure to have your Real ID handy for these purposes as well.
