Japan’s AI Sovereignty Strengthened with NVIDIA-Powered Supercomputer
In a move to enhance Japan’s AI capabilities and research infrastructure, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) announced the integration of NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs into its AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure 3.0 supercomputer (ABCI 3.0).
The collaboration with NVIDIA and HPE will see the HPE Cray XD system equipped with NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking, ensuring superior performance and scalability for advanced AI research and development in Japan.

Advancing AI R&D with ABCI 3.0
ABCI 3.0 marks the latest phase in Japan’s Open AI Computing Infrastructure initiative, aimed at pushing the boundaries of AI research and development. AIST Executive Officer Yoshio Tanaka expressed the institute’s dedication to developing generative AI capabilities in Japan through this technological upgrade.
The project, supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), signifies a significant investment in bolstering Japan’s computing resources and fostering innovation in AI. ABCI 3.0’s cutting-edge capabilities include 6 AI exaflops of computing capacity, 410 double-precision petaflops, and Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking for efficient data processing. The integration of NVIDIA H200 GPUs sets a new standard for energy-efficient AI computing, enhancing performance for a range of applications.
