Google DeepMind is dedicated to nurturing the next wave of AI leaders to
foster a stronger, more diverse global AI community. This involves enhancing access to AI and
scientific education. Last year, we partnered with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), Africa’s
first network of math sciences centers of excellence, to launch an AI for Science Master’s
program
with a $4.5M grant from Google DeepMind.

This funding assists AIMS in providing full scholarships, equipment, and
computing resources to talented local students, giving them access to advanced studies in math, AI,
and ML from top academics at AIMS South Africa. Students have the chance to accelerate scientific
discovery with guidance from Google DeepMind experts.

The inaugural cohort of students recently graduated at a ceremony at the AIMS
campus in Cape Town, South Africa. The next generation of AI leaders in Africa, Béria Chingnabé
Kalpélbé, Olivier Mahumawon Adjagba, and Diffo Mboudjiho Annette Dariose, shared their experiences
in groundbreaking AI research and their aspirations for their work.
