Feather: Simplifying Health Insurance for Expats in Europe
As a foreigner, navigating health insurance systems can often be difficult. German startup Feather thinks it has a solution and raised €6 million to help some of the 40-plus million expats working and living in Europe.
There are plenty of options for foreign nationals to get insurance, but the fragmented nature of the offers can make it hard to match with individual needs. Feather aims to carve a space for itself in this competitive market by offering tailored solutions.
Personalized Recommendations and Coverage
Feather’s CEO, Rob Schumacher, highlighted the startup’s focus on providing detailed recommendations to help individuals understand their insurance needs. This includes health insurance as well as additional options like life, pet, automotive, and personal liability coverage. The startup’s quick assessment tool helps users determine the type of coverage that suits them best.

Feather’s approach has resonated well with expats, with support coming from angel investors with experience in addressing the insurance needs of foreign workers. The startup’s lead investor, Keen Venture Partners, saw the potential in Feather’s unique offering for expats.
International Expansion and Growth
With backing from investors, Feather plans to expand its services to more countries in Europe. Currently serving expats in Germany, France, and Spain, the startup aims to launch in three more countries by the end of 2024. This expansion wouldn’t have been possible without additional funding.
Feather’s founders realized the potential of the expat niche for their digital-first offering, outperforming their initial growth projections in Spain. As Europe’s economies hire more foreign workers, the demand for tailored insurance solutions for expats is on the rise.
Balancing Innovation and Tradition
Feather aims to provide a transparent, user-friendly experience for expats, offering unbiased recommendations and digital claims processes. While embracing technology, the startup also values partnerships with legacy players and has senior insurance executives on its cap table.
By maintaining a sustainable business model and a measured approach to growth, Feather hopes to unlock new opportunities in the insurance market while avoiding the pitfalls faced by some insurtech startups. Schumacher emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation for long-term success.
