Infinity Nikki made a big splash during PlayStation’s State of Play spotlight in May, drawing a myriad of reactions from fans and newcomers alike. Fans of the beloved Nikki series of mobile fashion games were thrilled to see the pink-haired fashionista stepping into the triple-A spotlight. On the other hand, unfamiliar viewers either dismissed it as a typical dress-up game or found themselves unexpectedly drawn in by its charming and unique take on an open-world experience. I found myself falling into the latter camp. There was something about the game’s premise that intrigued me, and after playing several hours of the beta version, I have shifted from merely admiring Infinity Nikki conceptually to genuinely anticipating the full experience.
The adventure follows Nikki and her furry companion Momo as they prepare for a ball only to be whisked away to the magical realm of Miraland against their will. Guided by a god-like being named Ena the Curator, Nikki learns that she has been chosen to find and restore the Miracle Outfits – a collection of magical and powerful dresses that hold a divine truth. Along the way, Nikki discovers her unique ability as a Stylist, enabling her to find and create outfits at will.
As I delved into the game, I encountered three Ability Dresses that bestowed unique powers. One dress allowed Nikki to perform a floaty jump akin to Princess Peach, while another was geared towards combat, enabling her to purify corrupted enemies. The gameplay mechanics were intuitive, with abilities mapped to buttons and specialized dresses activated through a selection wheel.
Exploring Miraland was a visual treat, with vibrant flower fields, rolling hills, and a charming village to discover. The game’s visual aesthetics matched the beauty of Nikki’s wardrobe, ensuring a delightful experience for the players. The world was vast and inviting, offering a plethora of activities from side quests to the main quest of hunting for Whimstars.
Whimstars played a significant role in unlocking new items and perks from the Heart of Infinity skill tree, allowing players to customize Nikki’s outfits and accessories. The crafting system added depth to the gameplay, requiring players to gather materials and unlock outfit sketches through various activities.
The game’s narrative intrigue was complemented by well-rendered cutscenes and quirky characters, adding a layer of charm to the gameplay experience. The absence of overt violence in an open-world setting provided a refreshing change, allowing players to immerse themselves in the cozy and pleasant world of Infinity Nikki.
Infinity Nikki’s multiplayer component teased further depth to the game, hinting at a grander mystery waiting to be unraveled. As I eagerly await the game’s full release on PlayStation 5, PC, iOS, and Android, I am excited to continue exploring Miraland and uncovering its secrets. With its engaging gameplay mechanics, charming visuals, and delightful narrative, Infinity Nikki promises to be a captivating experience for players of all ages.
