Growing up, many cultures have traditional rites of passage to mark the transition into adulthood. However, in America, we seem to lack these clear markers, leading to a generation without strong role models to follow. Instead, we find ourselves looking up to internet influencers and celebrities, who have become the new icons of aspiration for many.

In response to Trump’s embrace of these influencers, Democrats are working to create a different vision of masculinity. Recently, Mike Nellis, a Democratic digital strategist, organized the White Dudes for Harris call, where numerous white male politicians and celebrities encouraged their counterparts to vote for Harris. This initiative aims to sway disaffected young men away from the Republican Party.

Nellis believes that there are countless white men in America who are disillusioned with MAGA politics and are seeking an alternative. He views Harris’ choice of bringing Tim Walz onto her ticket as a way to attract white male voters. Walz, a father, advocates for women’s rights and campaigns for a woman of color for president, challenging traditional notions of masculinity.

Recognizing the cultural and now political problem with young men, both political parties are acknowledging the need for change.

In 2019, I wrote about a YouTuber, Joey Salads, who ran for a political seat admiring Trump as a rule-breaker who had achieved success. Trump has long been a role model for 4chan incels and hypermasculine YouTube personalities, influencing their views and aspirations.

According to data, around 49% of young white men voted in the 2020 election, a significant increase from previous years, indicating a shift in political engagement among this demographic.
