The Future of Zoom: Introducing AI-Powered Document Creation

Starting Monday, Zoom users will have access to a new feature that revolutionizes the way they interact with documents during video calls. With the option to open a document tool directly from within the app, users can now create shareable files based on their meetings with incredible ease.

However, what sets this apart is the integration of generative AI to assist users in writing and editing these documents. This innovative feature, Zoom’s version of docs, is a strategic move to compete with industry giants like Microsoft and Google in becoming an all-encompassing workplace solution for businesses.

The star of this new feature is Zoom’s AI Companion, a powerful tool developed using cutting-edge LLM models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Zoom’s own models. This AI can take meeting transcripts and intelligently organize them into templates, tables, checklists, and trackers to streamline processes and tasks efficiently. These docs can seamlessly integrate into Zoom meetings for easy sharing and collaborative editing.

“AI is what makes the experience so differentiated,” explains Smita Hashim, Zoom’s chief product officer. “Our goal is to automate mundane and high-friction tasks, freeing up valuable time for our users.”

Zoom docs are the latest addition to Zoom’s Workplace collaborative tool, introduced earlier this year. In a competitive market dominated by Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, Zoom is banking on its AI capabilities to attract customers.

Notably, Zoom Workplace plans include the AI Companion at no additional cost, making it a cost-effective solution compared to Microsoft and Google’s add-on AI features. With pricing strategies designed to appeal to businesses of all sizes, Zoom is aiming to capture a significant market share.

While transitioning between workplace tech providers can be challenging, Zoom’s ease of integration alongside existing providers may sway potential users. As the company seeks to replicate its rapid growth during the pandemic, Zoom is continually innovating to stay relevant in a dynamic market.

With the introduction of AI-powered document creation, Zoom is poised to offer a comprehensive solution that combines video conferencing, document collaboration, and AI assistance. As the company evolves to meet the changing needs of businesses, the future of Zoom looks promising.
